Realizing the need for education and research in the field of energy, the Government of India established a national Centre for Energy Studies (CES) at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in the year 1976. Research and development activities on various relevant aspects of conventional as well as non conventional energy sources were initiated and suitable infrastructure established in its formative years. In response to the demand from industrial and other organizations for trained manpower in the interdisciplinary field of energy, a regular M.Tech. programme in Energy Studies has been offered at the CES since 1981. In order to accommodate the requests of many organizations for offering an M. Tech. course in the field of energy outside the normal working hours, an evening part time programme was started in 1989 which was subsequently revised to an M.Tech. programme in Energy and Environment Management in 1998. To further expanding the scope and depth of academic and research activities being undertaken by the 45-year-old Centre for Energy Studies, IIT Delhi etsablished a new 'Department of Energy Science and Engineering' in 2021. This brochure presents brief outlines of the academic programmes and research and development activities of CES. Also included are the profiles of its faculty members.

Solar Energy Park

The solar energy park was established in the year 1996 with research funding received from various Government Ministries namely Indian Council of Agriculture and Research (ICAR), Department of Science and Technology, New and Renewable Energy, Human and Resource and IIT Delhi etc. In solar energy park, there are low cost mud house, 5 kWp stand alone PV system , underground water pumping, various design of solar still, evacuated solar water heater, integrated PV hybrid active solar still, water heater, air heater, conventional and green house crop dryer, greenhouse cultivation system. The mud house has been integrated with day lighting and earth air heat exchanger and powered by electricity produced by stand alone system. All thermal based systems are also powered by semitransparent PV module integrated with thermal system to make the system sustainable. The system installed in solar energy park is successively running with optimal maintenance with help of research scholars working in different area of solar energy.
